History and previous winners

The Champions League was originally known as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup or European Cup since 1955 and is a competition for the top football clubs in Europe.  In the 1990s the tournament was further expanded and in 1992 became known as UEFA Champions League.

Last year, in 2011, Barcelona beat Manchester United 3-1 in the final which was played at Wembley in England, making it their fourth win since 1992 (the other two being 2006 and 2009).  To date, Real Madrid have won the tournament the most times, having had nine victories, the first five being the first five seasons of the competition (1956-1960) but have not won since 2002.  Spanish clubs have had 13 wins with Milan being the last and only club to win two consecutive tournaments in 1989 and 1990.  Since 1992, when the tournament changed its name, no club has ever managed consecutive wins.
